Rockford Museums to Visit in 2026 | BHHS Crosby Starck Real Estate

Have you visited any local museums lately? Many of our real estate agents grew up visiting the museums near our Rockford homes for sale, and now they take their own kids to these locations. Join them at these five museums in town and see what's kept them coming back again and again.

5 Museums to Visit Around Rockford, IL in 2026

Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum

Address: 411 Kent St., Rockford, IL 61102

The distinctive Swiss-inspired design of the Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum was created by Rockford businessman and mayor Robert Tinker after touring Europe in 1862. He built the cottage in 1865 and lived in it with his wife (local legend Mary Dorr Manny) and their family over several generations.

In the early 1940s, his descendants bequeathed the property, its grounds, and its contents to the Rockford Park District. It's been operating as a public museum ever since and still contains most of the Victorian artifacts the Tinker family left behind.

Discovery Center Museum

Address: 711 N. Main St., Rockford, IL 61103

Not all museums appeal to young kids, but Rockford's Discovery Center Museum certainly does. This attraction is a best-in-class version of a classic children's museum and features more than 300 hands-on activities and exhibits grouped into 12 areas, including:

  • Melody in Motion, an interactive play place where kids can experiment with fun equipment to produce different sounds
  • Color and Light, a dazzling rainbow-hued room full of science-backed activities to help little ones learn how light impacts their color vision
  • AgZibit, an area offering ethical and kid-safe versions of farming experiences like milking a cow or collecting eggs from a henhouse (no real animals involved)

The center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $12 per person for families who are not museum members.

Rockford Art Museum

Address: 711 N. Main St., Rockford, IL 61103

Don't forget about your local art museums! The Rockford Art Museum boasts an impressive collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other works that stand among some of the country's best. Explore the halls to find:

  • Pieces by local and regional artists depicting major players and events in Rockford's history
  • Post-war art and art from Black artists living in the American South, such as Lonnie Holley and Mose Tolliver
  • A collection of works from American artists considered masters of their craft, including George J. Robertson, Charles W. Dhalgreen, and Belle Emerson Keith

You can visit this museum Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and this winter is a particularly good time to visit.

Ethnic Heritage Museum and Graham-Ginestra House

Address: 1129 S. Main St., Rockford, IL 61101

Rockford wouldn't be the vibrant city it is today without the contributions of the many immigrants and formerly enslaved people who settled here in its early days. The Ethnic Heritage Museum chronicles how people from specific communities helped shape the local culture. There are six galleries you can visit during your guided tour of the building:

  • African-American
  • Irish
  • Hispanic
  • Italian
  • Polish
  • Lithuanian

The museum is only open from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, so book your spot in advance to make sure a guide will be available.

Burpee Museum of Natural History

Address: 737 N. Main St., Rockford, IL 61103

Dino buffs, young and old, will be thrilled by all the genuine bones, fossils, and other specimens on display at the Burpee Museum of Natural History. Walk through the building's three spacious stories to discover:

  • Real dinosaur fossils, including the world's best-preserved juvenile T. rex skeleton
  • A large exhibit devoted to the plants and wildlife that lived during Illinois' Ice Age
  • A real paleontology lab where professionals work to preserve newly discovered specimens
  • A bevy of living creatures like turtles, snakes, geckos, and more, all safe to touch with proper trainer oversight

Kids aged 4 to 12 can get in for just $13 each. Older kids and adults pay slightly more at $15 each.
